2019 Jaguar XJ to be reborn as high-tech electric flagship
The iconic Jaguar XJ will be relaunched but this time as a fully electric vehicle. In celebration of 50 years since its first launch the decision has been taken to use the technology of the iPace.
If Jaguar can pull this one off, they will get the jump on BMW and Mercedes-Benz, both of whom do not appear to have fully electric flagship vehicles in the pipeline. Expect Audi to turn up with an A8 eTron
The final design has been agreed according to the design boss Ian Callum. It is said to have been received very well internally at JLR and the go ahead has been given. Jaguar see this as a reinvention of the large saloon as Tesla have tied up the small hatchback and mid-sized saloon market.
Learning from the iPace, Jaguar say that they will equip the XJ onboard charger with more juice than the 7kw iPace charger and look like installing the more common 50kw unit. The 90kWh battery should easily equate to 300 miles in range and with 700nm and 395bhp on tap from the two motors, there will be no shortage of big car power.
The car cannot yet be ordered according to JLR, but expect a launch of early 2020. In the mean time be sure to check out the best electric lease deals of 2019 so far…
