BMW have released the new Mini for 2014. Think evolution and not revolution and you will have got the picture. BMW have launched it with new engines including a new 3 cylinder that was destined for the i3 range extender but was replaced. First available will be the best-selling Cooper D, Cooper and Cooper S. Underneath the Mini has changed more than is obvious from looking at the car. BMW, like VW, have developed platforms for both front wheel drive cars and rear wheel drive cars. The first car to launch on either is the new Mini and in its case the front drive platform is called the UKL1. Its extendable or can be made smaller and is lighter and stronger than what it replaces
BMW are really pushing the boat out with tricky kit on the new Mini. Many models will have head-up display for the navigation and future communication, with planned 3g connectivity for the car. Variable damper control is also going to feature on the faster models, with automatic ride height adjustment promised
Detail light work will set apart the new Mini from its predecessor and LED running lights. It is 4 inches longer and nearly 2 inches wider, but in the flesh it’s not obvious. Importantly for many users, boot space has leapt nearly 30% to a useable 210 litres total. Internally, BMW have redesigned the dashboard and layout. A new ring of LED’s around the speedo are used as warning and advice lights for things like park distance control. They also count down your proximity to a junction on your sat-nav
New Engines
For the initial launch, the engines remain unchanged for the Cooper, D and S. Expect a Coopers S JCW with big bhp during the summer to keep up with the current crop of pocket rockets. Also, maybe in 2015, the Mini 5 door will make an appearance.
The new 3 cylinder, at 1.5 litres, will appear as a petrol and a diesel. The Cooper will sport 134 bhp but be more economical than the unit it replaces.
The latest Cooper D at 92g/km brings BMW up to speed with competitors in the eco-car stakes and with 80 mpg will give Mini a real player in the efficient company car market. With figures like these, your BIK figures will be great but the tax man wont love you.
All the gearboxes are new, with a new six speed manual and two new auto boxes that are claimed to be just as efficient as the manual give or take.
Expect a few more goodies than you were used to with the old model, Standard kit includes keyless entry, isofix seats and Bluetooth.
