It’s not all about cars here at CarLease UK; our sister company VanLease UK supply a number of great commercial vehicles including panel vans, tippers, people carriers and pickups.
Thank you to Enterprise (Leigh nr Manchester) for allowing to us to photograph and review yet another addition to their fleet. If you are based in the Leigh/Wigan/St Helens area and you do need short-term car or van hire, just speak to one of their team. Car (or van) hire is very much suitable for businesses who require ad hoc type arrangements for example if you have a specific project for 2-3 weeks which requires a bigger van or a pickup.
As contract hire is a long term agreement, you would have to take a vehicle for a minimum of 24 months, which is clearly unsuitable for short-term requirements.
With contract hire it is a fixed term agreement, so if you do want to end the contract you have to go through a process known as “early termination” which often involves paying roughly half of the outstanding rentals on the agreement. If you do cancel a contract hire agreement very early, this could invoke significant costs. For personal users needing a van, say for moving house, van hire is a great (and cost-effective) tool. Again, long-term leasing would not be the right solution for you.
The pickup market is a relatively small market place compared to cars and vans. Available as single cabs, half cabs or double cabs, the pickup offers a hybrid between the car and van world. For vehicles with a payload of over 1000kg, these will be taxed as a van for the purpose of a) VAT; and b) BiK. With a rental-style financial product like contract hire and finance lease, a company can claim 100% of the rentals against tax so long as there is no private use.
For any private use, you need to apportion the private vs business use for the purposes of tax. In addition, a commercial vehicle can offer those who are Vat registered the opportunity to reclaim 100% of the VAT on the rentals. Again, you can only claim VAT for the proportion of business use; if you do have personal use you cannot claim VAT on that element. For BiK, vans, and pickups, are treated differently, in that you are not subject to tax in the same way as company cars. If you operate a commercial vehicle/pickup, you will not pay personal tax on the vehicle. However, if you do receive fuel, please note that there is taxable benefit of £3,170.00 for the tax year 2016-2017.
In short, pickups can offers business owners a tax efficient manner to operate vehicles.
