With the 992, Porsche make hybrid technology sexy.
With a mild hybrid and a plug-in version that has some electric only range, Porsche will do what they do best: show what can be done.
They have released details of the latest 911 and how they intend to have two clean running but equally exciting derivatives in the form of their new mild hybrid and the plug-in hybrid.
The two versions will share a similar battery pack but little else as the engineers at Porsche have been given free rein to produce something special.
In futureproofing the latest 911, Porsche for developed some incredible new engineering with bespoke motors developed specifically for this new car.
Not new to hybrid
Porsche are of course not new to hybrid technology but the Cayenne and Panamera share near zero technology with the new 992.
The new primary electric motor is housed in the rear part of the newly designed gearbox. The new box, shorter by two inches than the one it replaces, leaves room for a disc shaped electric motor, developed in house at Porsche.
In addition to being shorter and able to fit the motor, the new gearbox has been engineered to handle higher maximum torque.
In the four-wheel drive version, Porsche have designed yet another new electric motor. Almost tubular in design, it will sit in the axle between the front wheels
The battery is expected to be about 15kwh and should give the plug in version something more than a 30 mile battery only range. Expect a slightly smaller one on the hybrid.
