Following on from our car drivers v cyclists blog last week, in which we discussed the issues (and misnomer) relating to aggrieved car drivers and cyclists, further pro-cycling news has been released in relation to a new traffic light scheme in Cambridge.
The idea being introduced is a traffic light priority system, whereby cyclists will be given a 5 second head start over road users at certain junctures in the roads. This forms part of a firm commitment from the Council leaders to make Cambridgeshire a “capital of cycling.” Additionally, the Government announced a further £4.1m investment, in order to make improvements, such as dedicated cycle lanes and cycling-friendly roads
As a car leasing and van leasing provider, it is very easy to be accused of being a partisan supporter of all things pro-car and van. However, we have to be realistic and acknowledge that there are a huge amount of vehicles on UK roads and this continues to increase year on year, leading to congestion, pollution and worn-out roads (much of which is not being properly funded by the Government).
Schemes relating to cycling, particularly in cities and large towns are a fantastic solution to many of these issues. However, cyclists do need the support of the local Governments though investment i.e. dedicated cycling lanes, cycling-parking areas and traffic light priority. By doing so, this allows cyclists to ride properly and avoid unnecessary conflict with road users. Additionally, this ensures the safety of cyclists on busy and congested roads.
At CarLease UK, we are a big supporter of all things eco, whether eco car leasing deals or just eco-friendly policies on the roads. Ultimately, if the UK Government is genuinely going to achieve significant carbon reduction, a realistic amount of investment is required to ensure cyclists are given proper facilities to commute to work. Any policies also need to consider other road users, so to allow both parties to commute as harmoniously as is practicable.
