Porsche Mission E Concept; Specs & Details

9 October 2018 by phil

Porsche names the Mission E concept and begins to drip feed details in advance of the 2019 launch of the Taycan & Cross Turismo.

The Mission E Porsche has been displayed for 2 years now at various stages of completeness, with its formal naming, Taycan, being the best indicator yet that the mighty Porsche are ready to launch in early 2019.

Obviously the Taycan will go head to head with the Tesla Model S and with 600 hp and and four wheel drive, the Taycan is going to really rapid. Whether we see the 400 hp two wheel drive version will be decided by the uptake of the top model.

The Taycan will undoubtedly be the first of its kind in battery and charging technology. The holy grail of charging an electric car in the same time as filling a fuel tank will get ever closer with the 800 volt electrical system that Porsche have employed here. This system will allow lighter, thinner cables throughout the whole car which result in a weight saving.

Porsche have copyrighted several amazing technologies in the new Taycan. One of the most amazing is square profile copper wire for the electric motors. With no air gaps between wires, you can choose between a smaller motor or more power at the same size.

The outputs of the motors and the expectation that the Taycan may end up on the race track has meant that Porsche have included for extreme cooling systems on the motors.

As yet the battery specification has not been disclosed in size or technology terms, only that it will have a range in excess of 300 miles. Porsche did though say that the battery was deliberately reduced in size to speed up charging time and reduce weight. This makes me think that they decided on a long range version optional extra.

What they have disclosed is that the 800 volt system will allow charging rates way in excess of anything seen before.

The battery can be charged to a range of 240 miles in 15 minutes with a 350 kw DC system, something that is already becoming industry standard.
