MERCEDES-BENZ PLANNING A HUGE RANGE OF HYBRID, PLUG-IN’S AND ELECTRIC CARS
Mercedes already have a growing range of innovative hybrid and plug in hybrid cars. They already have some innovative solutions such as “in-motor electric power” too but there is so much more to come from the Mercedes brand in the fast-paced electric vehicle (EV) race…
To separate the new Mercedes-Benz Eco range, the Stuttgart manufacturer have named it “EQ Power”, and it will cover all types of electric and hybrids within the family.
For starters, Mercedes will introduce the new third-generation of its plug-in hybrid system on its flagship S-Class, the S560e. A useful electric only range of 25 miles is being promised from the 13.5kwh battery pack. The 25 miles figure is no accident as it is considered the new minimum to really qualify as a plug in hybrid.
Especially for the new S560e, Mercedes has developed a new 9 speed auto transmission that can cope with the torque of the two motors and can also make best use of electric only, which on its own is expected to reach 90mph.
With a massive 7.4kw charger, the hybrid Mercedes can be fully charged in 90 minutes. With some quick maths you get to £1.20 electricity cost for 25 miles or 112 mpg equivalent.
Look out for the headline figures.
Rumours at the release of the EQ are that from here on in, all Mercedes-Benz will be ready to accept autonomous, driver-less systems. That will of course be once the legal issues are overcome worldwide. But we know that the hybrid system will work with the navigation to work out the most efficient route for the electric drive.
Maybe its just a start.
